Lady Gorillas Lose First Game

On Friday, the Lady Gorillas Basketball Team played the Platte-Geddes Panthers in Gregory. Platte beat Gregory 53-44. In the first quarter, the Gorillas were ahead 9-4, but by the second quarter, the Panthers took the lead 21-27. In the end, they outscored Gregory by nine.

Eighth grader Jessy Jo VanDerWerff was the top scorer in the game, scoring fifteen points with a 28% shooting percentage. Junior Sydney Svatos made 27% of her shots and scored 8 points. Senior Megan Warnke scored seven points for the team with a 33% shooting average. Junior Brooklyn VanDerWerff earned six points with a 40% shooting average. Overall, the team made 26% of their attempted two-pointers and three-pointers and 36% of their attempted free throws.

Platte scored several points with free throws, as the Lady Gorillas had 32 fouls in the game. Three players, Megan Warnke, Gracie Kenzy, and Jessy Jo VanDerWerff, fouled out in the fourth quarter. Brooklyn VanDerWerff, Sydney Svatos, and Brooklyn Kenzy each had four fouls. For a few minutes in the fourth quarter, Gregory played with only four players, due to excessive fouls.  

“I thought we did a lot of good things throughout the game. At times, we moved the ball quite well, but we need to work on our spacing. Defensively I like some of the pressure that we put on them; however, we still need to work on our reaction to the ball,” Coach Myrmoe said.

The next game is a double header against Mount Vernon/ Plankinton tomorrow.
