“Touchdown!”

Brian Allmendinger, Head Coach

Gregory defeated Hanson by a score of 36-6 at Mike Dacy Field to open their 2016 football season. The game was much closer than the score indicated as the Gorillas went into halftime with a 14-6 lead.  Joseph Veskrna hauled in two touchdown passes in the second half while Jayd VanDerWerff broke his own school record for longest touchdown reception with an 89 yard catch and run.   JJ Beck made a key block to spring VanDerWerff for the score.

Offensively the Gorillas were led by Andy McCance who completed 8 of 13 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns. Veskrna caught three passes, two for touchdowns, for 100 yards.  VanDerWerff caught two passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns, not to mention a spectacular one handed catch on a two-point conversion.  VanDerWerff also added 41 yards on the ground on two carries.  Robert Vomacka  caught one pass for 25 yards and led the team in rushing with 92 yards.  Cade Fortuna, Jacob Haney, and Chase Thomas all received their first varsity starts on the offensive line and did a good job blocking.

The Gorilla defense played much better in this game compared to last season’s opener. The defense had a bend but don’t break mentality allowing some long drives but getting big stops in the red zone.  The defense also limited the big plays that hurt them last season holding Hanson to a 3.76 average per play.  JJ Beck was credited with 22 total tackles while fellow inside linebacker Tyler Murray enjoyed a tremendous debut finishing with 17 total tackles, one sack, and five tackles for loss.  Colten Nelson started at defensive end and played well finishing with 12 tackles.

Gregory will travel to Platte on Friday (9/2/16) for a game starting at 7:00 PM.
