Cross Country Team is Off and Running

Jennifer Voigt, Head Coach

The Gorilla Cross Country team is off and running again. After a couple weeks of early morning practices and a gradually growing roster, the team participated in our first meet last Friday morning at the Winner Golf Course.

Eleven Gorilla runners participated in the event and every one of them put in a fantastic effort. The morning started with the girls’ Junior Varsity 4,000 meter race. Emma Thomas looked really good for the first race of the year, finishing in 4th place with a time of 19:46, nearly four minutes faster than she ran this course last year.  Newcomer, Summer Talsma participated in her very first race finishing in a time of 22:32, with Samantha Timanus finishing next for the team in a time of 23:41.

Next up was the JV boys 4,000 meter race. Our three freshman, out for the first time this year, looked terrific.  Santana Serr came out strong for the win, taking 1st place in his first meet, running the race in 16:48.  Next in for the Gorillas was freshman Parker Harding in 4th with a time of 18:16, Sophomore Garret Roeder in at 19:10 and freshman Bryan Eagle Star at 19:57.

Our two varsity girls looked strong for their first race, as well. Megan Warnke started her season with a 7th place finish, coming in at 24:03.  Lauren Svatos was close behind in 8th place with a nice start to her season in a time of 24:29.

Finally, our two varsity runners rounded out the morning with a 5,000 meter race. Junior Aaron Voigt took 32 seconds off his time on this same course just a year ago, finishing almost 2 minutes ahead of the second place runner, in a time of 18 minutes.  Layne Olson had a super start to his year as well with a time of 21:12 to earn a 6th place finish.
