Gorillas travel to Mitchell for the Corn Palace Relays

The Gorillas traveled to Mitchell last Saturday April 16, to compete in the Corn Palace Relays. The meet consisted of class A and B schools. The Gorillas competed in class B against five other teams. The teams were Kimball/White Lake, Burke/South Central, Hanson, Platte/Geddes, and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.
The girls’ team didn’t place as a team, but did have some events place. Sydney Svatos placed 7th in triple jump with 29 ft. and Brooklyn VanDerWerff placed 10th in triple jump with 27 ft. and 8 in. For high jump Megan Warnke received 9th place with a 4 ft. 8 in. jump.
For the boys’ team, the 3200 relay placed 6th with a time of 10:27, and the 800 relay placed 7th with a time of 1:46. The 400 relay came close in 2nd place with a time of 50.45, and the medley relay placed 4th with a time of 4:11. For the last relay the boys placed 1st with a time of 3:41 in the 1600 relay. Joseph Veskrna placed 4th in the 110m hurdles in 17.10 and 2nd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.63. Blake Boes received 5th in the 300 hurdles in 48.53. Aaron Voigt placed 3rd in the 1600m run with a time of 4:54 and 7th in the 3200m run with a time of 10:28. Voigt also beat the school record in the 3200m run by .06 of a second. Triv Vosika placed 5th in high jump with 5 ft. 9 in., and Boes placed 10th in high jump with a jump of 5 ft. 7 in. Jayd VanDerWerff placed 4th with a jump of 19 ft. 8 in. in long jump. For triple jump Robert Vomacka placed 1st with a 39 ft. 4 in. jump, and Voigt placed 4th with 37 ft. 9 in. jump. The boys’ team did not place as a team.
Voigt said, “It felt really amazing breaking a 34 year old school record, and I hope that I can continue to bring my time down.”
