Gorillas fall short in championship

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Colome Cowboys in the district championship on Friday at the Corn Palace. The game started with the Cowboys taking an 11-6 lead in the first quarter. The Gorillas were down in the second quarter with the score being 28-24 going into half time. Coming out of halftime, the Gorillas and the Cowboys both scored 8 points, making the score 36-32. The Cowboys ended up winning the championship with a score of 57-48.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 32 followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 6 points. The Gorillas shot 41% from the field and 40% from the free throw line. Max Klundt, Aaron Voigt, Sean Kafka, and VanDerWerff each had two assists apiece.

Klundt, VanDerWerff, and Vomacka each had 1 steal for the night. Kolton Salonen helped the defense with 2 blocks, and Voigt also contributed with 1. The team overall had 18 rebounds total, with VanDerWerff getting 12 and Vomacka getting 3.

Coach Determan said, “Even though we were ready, things don’t always work out in your favor.” The Gorillas finished their season with a 15-7 record. The Gorillas will return next year only losing two seniors and will have a lot of returning players.
