Gorillas advance in district tournament

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Burke/South Central Cougars in the second round of district action on Tuesday. The game started out tight with the Cougars taking a 13-12 lead in the first quarter. The Gorillas took the lead in the second quarter with a 25-19 lead going into halftime. Coming out of halftime, the Cougars tried to spark a comeback outscoring the Gorillas by 4, pushing the score to 36-34. The Gorillas ran away with the game in the fourth quarter outscoring the Cougars by 13 making the final score 58-43 with the Gorillas advancing to the district championship.

Senior Sean Kafka led the Gorillas in scoring with 18 followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 17. Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff also had 14 points on the night. The Gorillas shot 45% from the field and 43% from the three-point line. The Gorillas also shot 71% from the free throw line. VanDerWerff led the team in assists with 5 followed by Kafka with 4.

Kafka had 4 steals on the night followed by sophomore Kolton Salonen with 2. VanDerWerff and Kafka had the only 2 blocks on the night for the Gorillas. Salonen also led in rebounds with 9 followed by sophomore Aaron Voigt with 6. Vomacka also had 5 rebounds on the night.

Kafka said, “It always feels good to pick up a win in the post season. We know that we have a tough game in front of us, and we have to prepare to come out and win another one.”

The Gorillas will play the Colome Cowboys in the Corn Palace in Mitchell for the district championship tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. The winner of that game will move on to regions, which will be held in the same place next Tuesday.
