Gorillas close out regular season with a win

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Platte/Geddes Black Panthers in their last regular season game and came out with a 5 point victory. The Gorillas hopped on top in the first quarter outscoring the Black Panthers 19-7. In the second the Gorillas slowed up a bit and were outscored by 4. Coming out of halftime, the Gorillas kept their lead only outscoring the Black Panthers by 1. In the fourth quarter the Gorillas were outscored by 4 pushing the final score to 52-47.

The Gorillas had 3 players in double digits on the night with sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff scoring 16, junior Robert Vomacka with 12, and sophomore Kolton Salonen with 10. The Gorillas shot 56% from the field and 46% from the three-point line. The team shot 6 for 10 from the free throw line. VanDerWerff led the team in assists with 8 followed by senior Sean Kafka with 4.

Kafka and VanDerWerff had 2 steals apiece on the night; Kafka also had the only block for the Gorillas. VanDerWerff brought down 8 rebounds followed by Vomacka and Kafka with 5 apiece.

VanDerWerff said, “We are glad that we could finish off the season so well, and we hope that we can continue this level of play throughout districts.”

The Gorillas’ next game will be at home Tuesday night in district action against the winner of the Burke/ South Central vs. Avon game.
