Trojans squeeze by Gorillas

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Parkston Trojans last Friday night taking the game to overtime, but came up short, losing the game 56-54. The Gorillas led most of the game taking an early 3 point lead in the first quarter. In the second the Gorillas outscored the Trojans by 1 making the lead 24-20. Coming out of the second half, the Gorillas were outscored by 1 cutting the lead to 40-37. In the fourth quarter the Trojans tied up the game 50-50 sending it to overtime. The Gorillas fought hard in overtime but were outscored 6-4 making the final 56-54.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 20 followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 9. Sophomore Aaron Voigt also contributed 8 points followed by sophomore Kolton Salonen and senior Sean Kafka with 7 apiece. Kafka led in assists on the night with 10 followed by Salonen with 3.

On the defensive side for the Gorillas, VanDerWerff led in steals with 5 followed by Voigt with 2. Vomacka pulled down 9 rebounds followed by Salonen with 7 and VanDerWerff with 6. VanDerWerff also had the only 2 blocks on the night for the Gorillas.

Kafka said, “It was really tough losing a close one like that, but we have some things that we can learn from Friday night, and we hope we can finish out the season with a bang.”

The Gorillas next game will be in a doubleheader against Scotland at home this Friday night starting with girls JV at 6:00 p.m.
