Gorillas fall short to Titans

The Gregory Gorillas fell short to the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton Titans in a game on Saturday. The Gorillas came out in the first quarter taking a small lead of 13-12. The Titans would come back in the second quarter outscoring the Gorillas by three pushing the score to 27-25. Coming out of half time the Gorillas took back the lead outscoring the Titans by 4 making the score 45-43. In the fourth quarter the Titans took off outscoring the Gorillas by 10 points making the final score 61-53.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring on the night with 17 points followed closely by senior Sean Kafka with 16 making 4 out of his 7 attempted 3-pointers. Aaron Voigt also contributed 10 points on the night. The Gorillas shot 40% from the field and 32% from the three-point line. Junior Robert Vomacka led the Gorillas in assists with 5 followed by VanDerWerff with 3.

On the defensive side for the Gorillas Vomacka led in rebounds with 10 followed by VanDerWerff with 8. Sophomore Kolton Salonen also had 5 rebounds on the night. Salonen and VanDerWerff each had 1 block apiece for the Gorillas.

Kafka said, “It felt good shooting so well from the three-point line on the night, and we hope we can take some things from the loss and use them in the next few games coming up.”

The Gorillas next game will be Friday night in a doubleheader in Parkston against the Trojans with JV starting at 5:00 p.m.
