Gorillas run past Pirates

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Avon Pirates Thursday night coming out on top with a score of 73-49. The Pirates were holding on to the Gorillas in the first quarter keeping the score at 14-14. The Gorillas started to pull away in the second outscoring the Pirates by 8. Coming out of halftime, the Gorillas continued to grow the lead outscoring the Pirates by 12 points. In the fourth quarter the Gorillas held their lead and outscored the Pirates by 4 points.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 20 followed closely by junior Robert Vomacka with 19. Senior Sean Kafka and sophomore Aaron Voigt both contributed 11 points apiece. Vomacka and Kafka also led in assists with 5 apiece. The Gorillas shot 43% from the field and 37% from the three-point line. The Gorillas also shot 60% from the free throw line.

VanDerWerff led in rebounds with 9 followed by sophomore Kolton Salonen with 8. Kafka led in steals with 10, followed by Salonen and Voigt with 2 apiece. Salonen also led in block on the night with 4.

Salonen said, “It felt good being such a defensive force in the win against Avon. Any time we’re able to dominate a team like that it is a sign we’re doing something right.”

The Gorillas next game will be tomorrow night against the Lyman Raiders with JV starting at 6:30.
