The Gorillas traveled to Marty on Saturday and narrowly pulled off a win with a final score of 48-47. In the first quarter the Gorillas came out firing taking a quick 5 point lead. In the second quarter the Braves outscored the Gorillas by 3 points cutting the lead to only 2 points going into halftime. Coming out of halftime, the Gorillas grew the lead to 7 points. The Braves came back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Gorillas by 6 points giving the Gorillas a 1 point victory.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 18, closely followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 17. The Gorillas shot 39% from the field, and 59% from the free throw line. Vomacka made 2/5 from the three point line, and sophomore Aaron Voigt shot 2/3. Overall the Gorillas shot 33% from the three-point line. Senior Sean Kafka led the Gorillas in assists with 4 followed by VanDerWerff and Voigt with 2 apiece.

Vomacka also led the team in rebounds with 12 giving him a double-double on the night, followed by VanDerWerff with 11 also giving him a double-double. Vomacka had 2 steals followed by Kafka with 1. Kafka also had the only block on the night for the Gorillas.

Vomacka said, “It was very exciting because their crowd created an intimidating environment; it was a quality win against a good team in our district which we may see again down the road.”

The Gorillas next game will be tomorrow night against Kimball-White Lake with JV starting at 6:30.
