Gorillas take down Thunder

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Andes Central/Dakota Christian Thunder Tuesday night and came out with the victory. Both teams started the game off slow in the 1st quarter with the score only climbing to 7-4. The game started heating up in the 2nd quarter with the Gorillas taking a 9 point lead. The Gorillas continued to pull ahead after half time pushing the score to 48-35. The Gorillas outscored the Thunder in every quarter winning the game 65-50.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 23 points followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 19. Senior Sean Kafka also contributed 12 points to the win. Vomacka led the team with 9 rebounds followed closely by Kafka with 8 rebounds. Kafka also had 6 assists.

On the defensive side for the Gorillas, VanDerWerff led the team in steals with 5 followed closely by Kafka with 4. Kafka had the only block on the night for the Gorillas.

VanDerWerff said, “As the game started off slow, we knew we needed to change our offense up by getting more ball movement, which caused more penetration and more shots for our outside shooters.”

The Gorillas next game will be away tonight against the Lower Brule Sioux with the C game starting at 5:30 p.m.
