Voigt places fifth at state cross country

The Gorilla Cross Country team traveled to Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday to compete in the state meet. Senior Daniel Bruque, junior Layne Olson, sophomore Aaron Voigt, sophomore Max Klundt, and freshman Garret Roeder competed as a team at the state meet. Junior Lauren Svatos and freshman Megan Warnke competed individually.

120 athletes competed in the men’s varsity race, Voigt placed 5th running a 5k time of 17:33, improving 2 places and 19 seconds from last year’s state meet. Next in for the Gorillas was Olson placing 59th with a time of 19:16. Bruque came in 89th with a time of 19:57, followed by Klundt in 99th with a time of 20:39. Roeder ran a time of 21:53 placing 114th.

In the women’s 5k race there were 110 competitors. Warnke placed 29th with a time of 21:30 improving 8 places from last year’s state meet. Svatos placed 98th out of the 110 with a time of 24:29.

Coach Voigt said, “It was a fantastic season and the team really worked hard right through to the end.  As we completed each race, I saw this team setting new goals and working toward those goals to make themselves and their team a little better each week.  It was a great year for Gorilla Cross Country!”
