The Gorilla Cross Country Team is now halfway through the season. They have attended the Chamberlain, Lyman, Bon Homme and Todd County meets.

The Gorillas first meet of the four was Chamberlain, with all runners competing well running their personal best times on the year. In the men’s race 85 runners competed with sophomore Aaron Voigt placing 3rd with a 5k time of 17:15. Senior Daniel Bruque ran a time of 19:24 placing 39th. Junior Layne Olson came in 50th with a time of 20:09. Sophomore Max Klundt and freshman Garret Roeder came in close together with Klundt placing 72nd with a time of 21:30 followed by Roeder placing 73rd with a time of 21:36. In the women’s race 58 athletes ran with freshman Megan Warnke coming in 29th with a 5k time of 21:28. Junior Lauren Svatos came in 42nd with a time of 22:49.

The next meet the Gorillas traveled to was Lyman on Saturday. 42 athletes ran in the men’s varsity race. Voigt won the race with a time of 17:30. Bruque came in 16th place with a time of 19:43 closely followed by Olson who placed 18th with a time of 19:50. Klundt came in 33rd with a time of 21:27 followed by Roeder in 37th with a time of 22:40. The Gorillas boy’s team placed 2nd at the meet with 35 team points. The meet also had a junior high race which sixth grader Emma Thomas and seventh grader Samantha Timanus competing in. Thomas came in 4th place with a 2k time of 11:22 followed by Timanus who ran an 11:25 coming in 5th place.

The third meet the Gorillas attended was held in Bon Homme. Voigt placed 4th in the men’s race with a time of 18:41. Olsen came in 31st with a time of 23:10 followed by Bruque in 32nd place with a time of 23:14. In the women’s race Warnke came in 18th with a time of 25:04 followed by Svatos who placed 24th with a time of 25:46. In the 3k junior high race, Timanus came in 11th with a time of 18:35. Thomas came in 14th with a time of 20:06.

The fourth and final meet that the Gorillas have competed in was the Todd County meet. It was a good sized meet with 62 in the men’s race and 38 in the women’s varsity race. In the men’s 5k race Voigt ran a 17:42 placing 4th in the meet. Bruque came in 20:09 placing 33rd. Olson placed 42nd running a time of 21:02. Next in for the Gorillas was Klundt running a 22:10 placing 53rd. Roeder came in with a time of 26:54 placing 61st. For the women’s varsity race Warnke came in 12th with a time of 22:10, and Svatos came in 27th with a time of 24:34. There was also a 2600 meter Junior High race at the meet. Timanus and Thomas came in close together, Timanus running an 11:35.3 closely followed by Thomas running a 11:35.8. There was a 1000 meter elementary race held at the meet in which Cruz Klundt placed 3rd with a time of 3:57.

Warnke said, “It’s been a strong year for everybody, and hopefully we have a lot of people who continue to run hard and make it to state.”

The Gorillas next meet will be held in Burke on Thursday starting at 2:00 p.m.
