Gorillas finish homecoming strong

The Gorilla’s homecoming week ended strong on Friday night with a big win against the Miller Rustlers. With 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, sophomore Andy McCance hit junior Joseph Veskrna for a 40 yard touchdown pass to put the lead to 8 with time ticking down.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas with 193 all-purpose yards followed by McCance with 149, and junior Robert Vomacka with 116. The scoring for the Gorillas was done by VanDerWerff, Veskrna, and Vomacka all with 1 touchdown apiece.

For the defensive side, the Gorillas were led by VanDerWerff with 12 tackles and 2 assists, followed by Vomacka with 9 tackles, and junior Matt Campbell with 7 tackles and 2 assists. Senior Noah Beck also contributed 4 tackles along with 3 assists.

The Gorillas struck first on the night with a 35 yard pass from McCance to VanDerWerff with the 2-point conversion failing making the game 6-0. Miller scored second with Daxton Diede running in a 1 yard touchdown, also failing to convert for the extra 2 points tying up the game at 6-6. The Rustlers took their only lead of the night when David Gnat had a 5 yard touchdown run, again, failing to convert the extra 2 points making the score 12-6. The Gorillas then took back the lead with a 5 yard run from Vomacka with senior Oliver Thieme kicking the extra point taking their lead back at 13-12. The Gorillas secured the win with the 40 yard pass from McCance to Veskrna pushing the lead to 20-12.

Quarterback Andy McCance said, “It was a big win and our defense really stepped up to the challenge. Our offence was a little slow, but we will get that fixed up for Wolsey-Wessington.”

The Gorillas will play their next game at home against the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
