Gorilla Cross Country Squad start off strong

The Gorilla Cross Country Team has the biggest group of runners that they have ever had this year. The boy’s team consists of Daniel Bruque, Layne Olson, Aaron Voigt, Max Klundt, and Garret Roeder. Lauren Svatos and Megan Warnke make up the girls varsity team this year. The Gorillas also have 6th grader Emma Thomas and 7th grader Samantha Timanus

The Gorillas have competed in four meets so far this year, starting off the season on Aug. 28 in Winner, with everyone running their first race of the year seeing how they could improve through the season. Sophomore Aaron Voigt won the 5k race with a time of 18:32, foreign exchange student Daniel Bruque placed 11th with a time of 21:32, junior Layne Olson and Sophomore Max Klundt ran together for most of the race with Olsen pulling ahead at the end running a 22:37 and placing 16th and Klundt placing 17th with a 22:52. For the women’s 5k race Megan Warnke came in 4th with a time of 23:37, and Lauren Svatos came in 6th place with a time of 24:37. In the 4k JH race Emma Thomas placed 2nd with a time of 23:18 Samantha Timanus placed 3rd with a time of 23:15.

The Gorillas hosted their second annual meet on Sep. 1. On this hot day, most times stayed the same or worsened due to the heat. Voigt brought home first place for the day with a time of 18:37. Olson earned 4th in the meet with a time of 21:32. Klundt ran a 23:23 bringing home 12th place. Bruque and Roeder ran together for most of the race and both came in with a time of 26:39 placing 13th and 14th respectively. For the women Warnke came in 2nd with a 24:01 5k time. Svatos ran a 24:19 coming in 3rd place at the meet. There was also a JV race at the meet with Emma Thomas placing 2nd with a time of 11:13 in the 2.1k race, followed by Samantha Timanus in 3rd with a 12:05.

The next meet that the Gorillas ran in was in Butte, NE on Thursday, Sep. 10. The course was a little short with everyone running better times. For the men’s race, Voigt placed 2nd with a time of 16:32, followed by Bruque with a 18:21 placing 7th, Olson placing 17th with a 19:42, Klundt  with a time of 20:32 placing 25th, and Roeder with a time of 21:39 placing 28th. For the women Warnke placed 3rd at the meet with a time of 20:35, followed by Svatos with a time of 21:43 placing 7th. There was also a Junior High race with Emma Thomas placing 5th with a time of 11:43 in the 2.5k race.

The last meet that the Gorillas attended was the Nike Heartland Preview meet on Saturday in Sioux Falls. 132 AA, A, and B athletes competed in the men’s race on Saturday with Voigt placing 37th overall and first among all the B school runners with a 17:36 in the 5k race. Olson and Bruque came in very closely together with times of 20:40 and 20:41 placing 116th and 117th. Klundt came in with a time of 21:33 placing 125th, and Roeder came in with a 22:53 placing 130th. For the women’s race on Saturday, Warnke ran a 21:41 in the 5k race placing 67th. Svatos placed 108th with a time of 23:40.

Coach Voigt said, “I’m really excited about how the season has started. We’ve got a great group of kids who work really hard. I look forward to seeing what we can do in the weeks ahead.” The Gorillas next meet will be held in Chamberlain tomorrow starting at 2:30 p.m.
