I am sure by now that you have heard about COVID-19 or the Coronavirus by now, and if you have not, you must be living under a rock. All news channels are covering the virus and some people are overreacting about the virus.
COVID-19 was first found positive in late December of 2019. The first positive case was in the city of Wuhan in Hubei province, China. Symptoms of the virus cause mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and trouble breathing.
The virus has hit the United States and almost all states, including South Dakota. The coronavirus is spread by person-to-person contact and is affecting the elderly more than any other age group. People who are getting infected more have underlying health conditions, are older than 50 years old, and have complications with the virus. The safest way to make sure that you are safe from the virus is by washing your hands, disinfecting all surfaces, and staying home if you are sick.
Doctors are comparing COVID-19 to Influenza A or B. Although people are flipping out about the new virus, there have only been 35 deaths in the United States caused by the coronavirus. The flu has caused 16,000 deaths just this year. Obviously, the flu is deadlier, and people are still not that worried about it because it is not new like COVID-19. So, instead of overreacting about the coronavirus, we should spend more time trying to lower the death rate for the flu and live a healthier lifestyle by washing our hands.
