Lady Gorillas Defeat Jones County and Lose to Scotland

On Saturday, the girls’ varsity team beat Jones County at a home game 58 – 48. In the first quarter, Gregory was ahead by 4 points and the score was 9 – 13. By half time, the score was 26 – 19 with Gregory in the lead. In the third quarter, the score was 44(G) – 37(JC). Gregory won by 10 points in the end. The Lady Gorillas had 45 total rebounds, 5 assists, 8 steals, 1 block, 10 turnovers, and 15 personal fouls.

Jessy Jo VanDerWerff scored an impressive 33 points, making 13 of 29 (45%) of her field goals and 5 of 6 (83%) of her free throws. Sydney Svatos made 15 points. She made 7 of 15 (47%) of her field goals and 1 of 2 (50%) of her free throws. Megan Warnke scored 5 points, making 2 of 10 (20%) of her field goals and 1 of 2 (50%) of her free throws.

Sydney Svatos had a double double, making 13 rebounds as well as 15 points. She also had 1 assist and 1 steal. Megan Warnke grabbed 12 rebounds, and one steal. Gracie Kenzy took 10 rebounds and one steal.

“We played well offensively, which we’ve been doing for most part of the year. Again, though, defensively, we gave up too many points, and we need to get better at holding the other team down in the amount of points they’re putting up on the board,” Coach Klundt said.

On Friday, the basketball team traveled to Scotland for a double header. The girls’ varsity team lost 62-76. The game started out very close; both teams scored 16 points in the first quarter. By the second quarter, Scotland secured a 5-point lead. The score was 29 – 34 at half time. In the third quarter, Scotland’s lead grew by four points, making the score 42 (G) – 51 (S). In the end, Scotland had beat Gregory by 14 points.

Gregory’s leading scorer for the game was Sydney Svatos, who scored 17 points. She made 5 of 12 (42%) of her field goals and 4 of 5 (80%) of her free throws. Jessy Jo VanDerWerff scored 14 points, making 5 of 14 (36%) of her field goals and 4 of 4 (100%) of her free throws. Making 3 of 11 (27%) of her field goals and 7 of 8 (88%) of her free throws was Brooklyn VanDerWerff, who scored a total of 13 points. Both Megan Warnke and Gracie Kenzy scored 9 points. Warnke made 4 of 9 (44%) of her field goals and 1 of 2 (50%) of her free throws, and Kenzy made 4 of 7 (57%) of her field goals and 0 of 2 (0%) of her free throws.

Sydney Svatos had another double double, making 12 rebounds as well as her 17 points. She also had one assist and one steal. Megan Warnke grabbed 10 rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Brooklyn VanDerWerff took 6 rebounds and two assists. Gracie Kenzy also had 6 rebounds, and one assist. Jessy Jo VanDerWerff achieved 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and one steal.
