Gorillas Dominate Stanley County and Lose a Close One Against Parkston

Last Thursday, the Lady Gorillas crushed Stanley County by 36 points in Fort Pierre. In the first quarter, it seemed like it might be a close game, with Gregory at 17 points and Stanley County at 14. By the second quarter, Gregory took a definitive lead; the score was 41 – 22. The lead carried over into the third quarter and the scoreboard read 61 – 31. At the end of the game, Gregory won 76 – 40. The Lady Gorillas had a 54% field goal average and a 42% free throw average. The girls had 34 rebounds, 13 assists, and 16 steals.

Jessy Jo VanDerWerff scored 30 points, making 12 of 20 (60%) of her field goals and 4 of 8 (50%) of her freethrows. Sydney Svatos  made 7 of 12 (58%) of her field goals and 3 of 4 (75%) of her freethrows. Megan Warnke made 16 points, shooting 8 of 18 (44%) of her field goals and 0 of 3 (0%) of her free throws.

Sydney Svatos had a double double. She had 14 rebounds, and 3 steals. Megan Warnke had 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Brooklyn VanDerWerff grabbed 5 rebounds, one assist, and 1 steal. Jessy Jo VanDerWerff took 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Emma Thomas had 2 assists and 4 steals. Gracie Kenzy took 4 rebounds and 1 steal.

“I thought we played really well and when we get up by so many we can stay there. We all worked together as a team and it felt good to win by so much,” Sydney Svatos said.

Last Friday, the Girls’ Basketball Team played a close game against Parkston at home. The first quarter was close: 13 (P) – 10 (G). The second quarter was tied 25 – 25. The third quarter was still tied, 31 – 31. Both sides of the spectator stands were hopeful that their team would reign victorious; however, only the visitors cheered when the game ended. Parkston beat Gregory 66 – 53.

The Lady Gorillas had a team shooting percentage of 30% and a free throw percentage of 70%. The girls had 32 rebounds, 10 assists, 11 steals, and 20 personal fouls.

Jessy Jo VanDerWerff  scored 20 points, making 6 of 26 (23%) of her field goals and 7 of 7 (100%) of her free throws. Megan Warnke made 5 of 10 (50%) of her field goals and 1 of 5 (20%) of her free throws. Gracie Kenzy scored 10 points, making 4 of 11 (36%) of her field goals and 2 of 2 (100%) of her free throws.

Jessy Jo VanDerWerff had 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Sydney Svatos had 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Megan Warnke had 7 rebounds and one steal. Gracie Kenzy had 5 rebounds and one assist.
