Gorillas narrowly defeat Cavaliers

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Bon Homme Cavaliers on Friday and came out on top in a close game with a final score of 59-52. The game started off close with the Gorillas only having a 1 point lead at the end of the first. In the second quarter the Gorillas were outscored by 3 with the score going into halftime ending at 29-27. Coming out in the second half, the Gorillas started to build a lead with the score being pushed to 45-38. In the fourth quarter the Cavaliers tried holding on, but the deficit was too much, with the Gorillas finishing with a 7 point victory.

Sophomore Aaron Voigt led the team in scoring with 19 points followed by sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff with 13. Junior Robert Vomacka also had 12 points for the Gorillas. The Gorillas shot 32% from the field and 38% from the three-point line. Senior Sean Kafka led in assists with 8.

On the defensive side for the Gorillas, Kafka also had 5 steals. Vomacka had the only 2 blocks on the night for the Gorillas. Vomacka also led in rebounds for the Gorillas with 10 giving him a double-double on the night. VanDerWerff had 8 rebounds followed by Voigt with 6. Sophomore Kolton Salonen and Kafka had 4 rebounds apiece.

Voigt said, “It felt good winning our fourth one in a row on Friday, and we hope that we can keep the momentum going through our last regular season game and throughout the post season.”

The Gorillas’ next game will be in districts. They are seeded one in the district, so they will play a home game Tuesday night against the winner of the Burke/ South Central and Avon game.
