Gorillas take victory against Highlanders

The Gregory Gorillas took on the Scotland Highlanders last Friday night with a 7 point victory. The game started off close with the first quarter ending with a score of 12-12. The Gorillas started to fall behind in the second quarter being outscored by 5 with the score going to 27-22. The Gorillas came out in the second half on fire outscoring the Highlanders by 12 giving them a 7 point lead of 40-33. The Gorillas traded baskets with the Highlanders in the fourth quarter keeping their lead of 7 points making the final score 56-49.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 19 followed by junior Robert Vomacka and senior Sean Kafka with 11 apiece. Sophomore Aaron Voigt also had 9 points. The Gorillas shot 38% from both the field and the three point line. The Gorillas shot 83% from the free-throw line making 10 out of the 12 they shot. Kafka led in assists on the night with 6 followed by Vomacka with 3.

VanDerWerff also had 10 rebounds on the night giving him a double-double. Vomacka had 6 rebounds followed by Voigt with 5. Kafka had 6 steals on the night followed by Voigt with 2. Vomacka and VanDerWerff had the only blocks on the night with 1 apiece.

VanDerWerff said, “We played hard, and we were glad that we could come out with a victory. We hope that we can finish out the season strong and go into districts with a good seed.”

The Gorillas next game will be against Bon Homme at home on Friday starting at 6:30 p.m. with the JV.
