Gorillas slide past Red Raiders

The Gorillas took on the Lyman Red Raiders in a game Monday and came out with a close win. The Gorillas came out hot in the first quarter outscoring the Red Raiders 20-13. The Gorillas continued to grow the lead in the second, pushing the score to 38-22. Coming out of halftime the Red Raiders tried to spark a comeback outscoring the Gorillas by 2 making the score 50-36. The Gorillas slowed down in the fourth only scoring 6 points, being outscored by 8. The final score of the game was 56-50.

The Gorillas had 4 players in double figures for points on the night with sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff leading with 15, followed by junior Robert Vomacka with 13. Senior Sean Kafka had 11, and sophomore Aaron Voigt closely followed with 10. The Gorillas shot 37% from the field, and 23% from the three-point line. Vomacka also led in assists with 3 followed by Voigt, VanDerWerff, Kafka, and sophomore Kolton Salonen all with 2 apiece.

Defensively everybody for the Gorillas had one steal except for VanDerWerff with 2. Kafka had 2 blocks on the night followed by VanDerWerff and Salonen with 1 apiece. Vomacka led in rebounds with 9 followed by VanDerWerff with 8. Voigt also had 7 rebounds on the night.

Vomacka said, “We learned a few things from that game, and we know that we can’t just get a lead and try to coast to the finish. We need to shut teams out if we want to be a good team.”

The Gorilla’s next game will be a doubleheader against the Scotland Highlanders on Friday starting with the girls’ varsity at 6:00 p.m.
