Gorillas take down WildKats

The Gregory Gorillas came out on top in a game against the Kimball-White Lake Wildkats last night. The Gorillas came out firing in the first quarter outscoring the Wildkats 22-12. The Gorillas held the lead the whole game never slowing down. In the second quarter the Gorillas outscored the Wildkats by 5 more points growing the lead to 40-25. In the second half the Gorillas continued to make the lead larger outscoring the Wildkats 18-14 making the score 58-39. The Wildkats tried to spark a fourth quarter comeback outscoring the Gorillas 14-8, but the Gorillas came out on top 66-53.

Sophomore Jayd VanDerWerff led the Gorillas in scoring with 27 followed by sophomore Kolton Salonen with 13. Junior Robert Vomacka also scored 8 on the night for the Gorillas. The Gorillas shot 49% from the field. From the three point line the Gorillas shot 26%. Vomacka led the Gorillas in assists with 5 closely followed by VanDerWerff with 4.

On the defensive side for the Gorillas VanDerWerff led in rebounds with 8 followed by senior Sean Kafka with 6. Vomacka also had 5 rebounds on the night. VanDerWerff and Kafka both had 3 steals apiece followed by sophomore Aaron Voigt and Salonen with 2 apiece.

VanDerWerff said, “It felt good to get this big win; hopefully, we can use this week long break to improve on things we did wrong that we will need in our next few games.”

The Gorillas next game will be next Thursday at home against the Avon Pirates with JV starting at 6:30.
