On Monday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. the Region V Festival Concert was held at the Gregory Memorial Auditorium. 15 schools came to Gregory in the morning and practiced throughout the day and performed that night. The concert was put together by Jared and Katie Opp. The guest directors this year for the band was Dr. Haley Armstrong. For the choir was Dr. Matthew Bumbach and the accompanist was Mrs. Colleen Murray from Gregory.

In the band they had around 80 students, and in the choir they had around 115. Dr. Haley Armstrong is a native of Sonora, CA, and earned a bachelor’s degrees in music education and trumpet performance from Eastern Washington University. Then later on she earned a master’s degree in music education, and then she earned her doctorate in conducting. Before becoming the director of bands at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, she worked as a conductor for the U.S. Air Force Band. Even before that, she was a commander and conductor of the Air Force Band of the Pacific. Now, she is an active member of the SD Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors Association, and SD Bandmasters Association.

Dr. Matthew Bumbach is currently the Director of Choirs and Assistant Professor at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He earned a D.M.A. in choral conducting and previously served as assistant professor and director of vocal music at College of Central Florida, conductor of the Marion Civic Chorale, director of choirs at Seminole High School, and director of vocal music at Pine Castle Christian Academy. His choral music is published by Hal Leonard. He is an active conductor, composer, and educator.

The High School and Middle School Holiday Concert will be held on Monday Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. Also the Elementary Holiday Concert is scheduled for Monday Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
