Last Saturday, the Gregory Quiz Bowl team traveled to the Mitchell Pepsi-Cola Theatre of Preforming Arts to compete in the Q1073 Quiz Bowl. The team consisted of Captain Issac Barreto, Aaron Sunquist, Peyton Feyereisen, and alternates Matt Sinclair and Evan Juracek. The boys were one of the 32 teams that started in October and had continuously won to land themselves a place in the finals. Eight finalists flaunted their trivial knowledge in an attempt to out-know the other teams. Gregory won third place and received $250. Huron placed second for a prize of $500, and McCook Central took home the grand prize of $1,000.

To choose the eight finalists, radio station Q1073 broadcasted live phone calls between the two teams and the questioner. Through these phone calls, Gregory beat Hanson 3-1, Ethan 3-1, and Huron 3-2. The five boys then traveled to Mitchell, where they played Freeman and won 6-3. After that, Gregory lost to McCook Central 6-5 and Huron 6-2, landing them in third place.

“We started out really strong beating Freeman 6-3, then we went up against the team that ended up getting first. It was very close; we lost by one. We only had one more opportunity because it was double elimination. We played Huron, who we had beaten previously this season, but it didn’t seem like we had much luck. The questions that round weren’t questions we knew a lot about. We ended up with third, which is one better than last year. As a whole, the boys did very well in this tournament,” Coach Graber said.

This year’s quiz bowl team is very thankful to their sponsors: Rosebud Electric, Bankwest, Gregory Lanes, Consumer Federal Credit Union, Buches Foods, First Fidelity Bank, Avera Gregory Hospital, and the Gray House Motel.
