Cenek Kasper, a 17 year old foreign exchange student came to America to live with Wade and Amy Juracek. Cenek is from Prague, Czech Republic. Cenek started learning English when he was only eight years old. Cenek is not an only child; he has one sister, Adila, two half-sisters, Antomie and Katerina, and two step-sisters, Sarah and Katerina.

Cenek can speak three languages: German, Czech, and English. Cenek’s favorite subject in school is math. He said that he is still learning English because it is hard. He wanted to come to America because he loves to travel and wants to visit many countries while being a foreign exchange student. He likes the people in America, the free time, activities, sports, and food. Some things that he dislikes about America are that we don’t have floorball, the sport that he played back in the Czech Republic, and he is far away from his friends and family. Coming to America was crucial because he wanted to learn more English and get to know a different culture.

Many differences are shown between education here in America and the Czech Republic. The biggest difference is the Czech Republic students can’t choose their own classes, so they have all of these subjects: math, foreign languages, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, and physical education. Last year he had 13 classes but doesn’t have every class every other day. Back at home, Cenek also had about 360 students in his school. The sport that he played back at home before attending primary school was volleyball. Since then, he has participated in basketball, floorball, track, swimming, and skiing. Cenek says he has always wanted to play American football, and he likes to play basketball since he played it in primary school. In his spare time back in the Czech Republic, he played a lot of floorball because they have six to nine practices a week and traveling to practice is rough because it takes about 45 minutes to get to the gym. He studied also for school and spent time with his friends. Here in America, he has practice after school, spends time with his friends, watches television, and goes to the gym to play basketball.

If he could travel anywhere in the world, he said that it would be to New Zealand. He likes most of his teachers here, but the teachers are different than his teachers back in the Czech Republic. Cenek thinks school in America is a little bit easier, but it is pretty similar. Cenek also said that there is a huge difference between America and the Czech Republic because they are very different cultures. Culture wise he misses his mom, dad, and sister a lot. If he could bring one person to America with him, it would be his sister, Adila. When Cenek was little, he always wanted to be a pilot, but he now wants to be an engineer. Cenek’s big dreams are wanting to participate in the Czech Republic Floorball National Team and go to the world championship in Canada in 2019. Cenek said that America surprised him a little bit, but he really likes to be here. He will be returning to the Czech Republic in June but would also like to come back to America sometime in the future.
